Why Is Testing Important?

Simply put, mutation testing is important because not all lung cancers are the same. If a screening shows something that doesn't look right, the healthcare team will do more tests to investigate. This way, the team can make a more accurate diagnosis and, if need be, get treatment started.

Lung cancer occurs when normal lung cells change by developing growth and/or survival advantages due to DNA alterations or changes - also known as mutations. Tests that look for specific biological changes, or biomarkers, have been developed to figure out the specific type of lung cancer a patient has.

Examples of biomarkers that may be examined in lung cancer

  • EGFR gene mutation
  • EGFR T790M mutation (secondary mutation in the EGFR gene)
  • ALK gene mutation
  • KRAS gene mutation
  • MET gene mutation
  • ROS1 gene mutation
  • PD-L1 levels
  • HER2 mutations

How Are Test Results Used?

The goal of biomarker testing is to allow your healthcare team to provide the best treatment options for your cancer type - from your diagnosis right through to possible cancer progression. This is an approach known as personalized medicine - or targeted therapy.

Targeted therapies

Targeted therapies have been developed recently to help with treatment of cancers with specific biomarkers. This newer type of cancer treatment works by seeking out a specific biomarker to lead it to the cancer cells it is designed to fight. The idea is to focus more of the treatment on the cancer, and to cause less damage to normal cells. Targeted therapies are only available for cancers with some of the known biomarkers.
